How a disillusioned Marvel editor built a comic book empire from the ground up
In short: After growing frustrated with the corporate bureaucracy at Marvel, Jim Shooter launched his own publishing house in 1989. By securing classic licenses and recruiting top talent, Valiant Comics quickly became a powerhouse, eventually challenging the industry giants and setting sales records that redefined the independent comic book market for decades.
Founded in 1989 by Jim Shooter, a former Marvel editor-in-chief, alongside Steven Massarsky and Winston Fowlkes, Valiant Comics emerged from a desire to escape the stifling corporate environment of the major publishers. Shooter, who had previously attempted to purchase Marvel, utilized venture capital to create an interconnected universe of characters. By securing rights to legacy properties from Dell and Gold Key Comics—including figures like Magnus, Robot Fighter and Turok: Son of Stone—Valiant established a unique foundation that blended licensed classics with original creations.
The company’s rise was meteoric. By 1993, Valiant became the first publisher outside of the industry leaders, Marvel and DC, to capture more than 5% of the market share. Their success was driven by innovative marketing tactics, such as chromium covers and origin-focused zero issues, which resonated with 1990s collectors. Titles like Harbinger and Rai consistently dominated industry charts, with Harbinger No. 1 holding a top-ten spot for eight consecutive months. This period cemented Valiant’s reputation as a disruptive force, earning Shooter a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992.
Following a 1994 acquisition by Acclaim Entertainment for $65 million, the company faced significant turbulence, eventually filing for bankruptcy in 2004. However, the brand saw a major revival in 2012 under Valiant Entertainment. Initiatives like the Summer of Valiant successfully relaunched their universe with titles such as X-O Manowar, which became the largest new publisher launch in over a decade. Despite subsequent ownership changes, including a 2018 acquisition by DMG Entertainment and a 2023 licensing partnership with Alien Books, the Valiant Universe remains a significant cultural touchstone, with characters like Bloodshot even reaching the big screen.
