The American art museum voted number one in the United States
In short: While many museums boast massive collections, the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) has recently secured a unique distinction. In 2023 and 2024, readers of USA Today voted it the top art museum in the country, a testament to its encyclopedic reach and cultural significance.
The DIA is a massive cultural landmark in midtown Detroit, spanning over 100 galleries and 658,000 square feet of space. Its collection is vast, housing more than 65,000 works valued at up to $8.1 billion as of a 2014 appraisal. The museum is recognized as one of the top six museums in the U.S., offering an encyclopedic survey that moves from ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian artifacts to contemporary global art.
The museum is particularly renowned for its American art collection, which officials rank as the third-best in the nation. This collection began immediately after the museum's founding in 1883 and now features masterpieces from the 18th through the 20th centuries. It includes works by iconic figures such as Georgia O'Keeffe, Andy Warhol, and Winslow Homer, as well as a diverse range of media including sculpture, furniture, and decorative arts.
Beyond its American holdings, the DIA is a pioneer in acquiring international masterpieces. In 1922, it purchased the first paintings by Vincent van Gogh and Henri Matisse to enter any American public collection. The museum also holds significant works by Old Masters like Rembrandt van Rijn and Albrecht Dürer, and it was an early adopter of German Expressionism, collecting works by artists such as Max Beckmann and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.
The physical campus is also a feat of architecture. Designed by Paul Philippe Cret, the original white marble building is flanked by north and south wings. It houses a 1,150-seat theatre, a 380-seat recital hall, and a conservation services laboratory, all situated within Detroit's Cultural Center Historic District.
