Does your mind create reality or just witness it?

Does Consciousness Create Reality? Double Slit Experiment may show the Answer. · 10:28 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: In the quantum world, particles exist as waves of probability until they are measured. This leaves a haunting question: does an observer's consciousness actually force reality to take shape? While some theories suggest our minds collapse the wave function, others argue that physics remains indifferent to our existence.

The foundation of this mystery lies in the double-slit experiment. When particles like atoms are not measured, they behave as waves of probability, existing in multiple states simultaneously (superposition). However, when researchers attempt to determine 'which way' a particle passes through a slit by using a detector, the particles suddenly stop behaving like waves and act like distinct pieces of matter. This phenomenon is known as the measurement problem: why does the act of gathering information change the physical state of the system?

Several interpretations compete to explain this. The Copenhagen interpretation, established in 1925 by Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg, is the most widely accepted; it suggests that an unmeasured atom is not distinct but notably avoids claiming consciousness is required for this transition. Conversely, the von Neumann–Wigner interpretation argues that the 'collapse' of the wave function occurs only when a conscious mind interprets the measurement. This implies that without a conscious observer, the world would remain a mere blur of probabilities.

Modern physics offers other paths. Hugh Everett’s 1957 many-worlds interpretation suggests there is no collapse at all; instead, every possibility branches into a different reality. While some recent research in 2019 by Massimiliano Proietti suggests two equally provable realities might exist at a quantum level, the theory remains unprovable because these other worlds are inaccessible. Furthermore, independent re-analyses of experiments claiming to show 'mind-matter interaction'—where human attention supposedly shifts physical patterns—have found no statistically significant evidence, with critics noting that such claims often rely on flawed statistical procedures.

Ultimately, while the link between consciousness and matter is a profound philosophical frontier, it remains scientifically contested. Most physicists today prefer objective concepts like quantum decoherence over the von Neumann–Wigner view because the latter introduces an infinite number of uncontrollable parameters into what should be rigorous scientific inquiry.
