Is the 10,000 steps a day goal actually a marketing myth?

In short: For decades, we have chased the magic number of 10,000 steps daily to stay fit. But this target wasn't born in a lab; it emerged from a Japanese marketing campaign. While walking more is undeniably beneficial, the specific threshold we all follow may be more arbitrary than scientific.

The obsession with 10,000 steps traces back to the 1960s in Japan. During the 1964 Olympics, a step counter company launched a campaign for a device called the manpo-kei, which literally translates to '10,000 steps meter.' The number was chosen because the Japanese character for 10,000 (万) resembles a person walking. While scientists at the time knew movement improved longevity, there was no research to support 10,000 as an optimal goal.

Recent large-scale studies suggest that the benefits of walking begin much earlier than the 10,000 mark. An analysis of more than 200,000 individuals, appearing in the European Journal of Preventative Cardiology, demonstrated that walking only 2,337 steps daily may lower mortality from circulatory and heart conditions. Furthermore, reaching at least 3,867 steps a day was linked to a reduced risk of death from any cause.

The relationship between steps and health is nuanced and depends on age. For those aged 60 and over, the most significant health improvements were seen in people taking between 6,000 and 10,000 steps, after which the benefits began to tail off. For younger individuals, the optimal range shifts slightly to between 7,000 and 13,000 steps. Ultimately, experts suggest that instead of chasing a single number, you should aim for small, sustainable increases—such as 1,000 more steps than your current daily average.
