Matter is not a separate substance, but a form of energy

In short: For centuries, scientists viewed mass and energy as two distinct categories of the universe. Albert Einstein overturned this logic, proving they are fundamentally the same physical entity. This means that every object possesses an inherent amount of energy simply by existing in space.

The principle of mass-energy equivalence is most famously expressed through the equation E=mc². In this formula, 'E' represents energy, 'm' stands for mass, and 'c' is the speed of light. Because the speed of light is such a massive constant, even a tiny amount of matter contains a staggering amount of potential energy. This realization revolutionized physics by showing that mass is not just 'stuff,' but rather a highly concentrated form of energy.

A major consequence of this identity is 'rest energy'. This rule states that stationary items hold energy equal to their mass times the square of light's velocity. When a system undergoes a process where energy is released—such as in nuclear reactions—the actual mass of the body decreases. This conversion is visible in chemical reactions but becomes significantly more impactful in nuclear processes.

A primary example of matter becoming energy is the fission of Uranium-235, where the nucleus of a heavy element splits to release energy. This same mechanism powers stars like the Sun. Furthermore, the principle explains why an object's mass appears to increase significantly as it approaches speeds near that of light (approximately 3 × 10⁸ metres per second). Regarding cosmology, such parity permits actual pairs having positive mass-energy; Stephen W. Hawking initially proved this regarding black holes. Hawking in the context of black holes.

Ultimately, mass-energy equivalence tells us that the law of conservation of energy applies to both mass and energy interchangeably. It provides the conversion factor needed to understand how the universe balances its books: matter can be transformed into energy, and energy can manifest as matter.
