The war artist who vanished while documenting the front lines of the Second World War
In short: Eric Ravilious was a celebrated illustrator and designer before becoming one of Britain's first official war artists. He captured the stark reality of military life through watercolours and lithographs, often flying with pilots to sketch from the air. His career ended abruptly during a 1942 rescue mission near Iceland.
Born in 1903, Eric Ravilious established a diverse career as a wood engraver, muralist, and designer for Wedgwood pottery. By the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, he had already built a reputation for his distinct artistic style. He initially joined the Royal Observer Corps, but his talent for recording the conflict soon led to his appointment as an official War Artist in 1940, serving with the Admiralty.
Ravilious was known for his immersive approach to documentation. He often lived alongside the crews he depicted, even flying in aircraft to observe and sketch from the sky. His work captured both the technical machinery of war—such as aircraft carriers and coastal defences—and the quiet, everyday moments of life on airfields. However, his art sometimes blended reality with artistic license; for instance, he once painted Spitfires at a base where they did not actually arrive until months later.
In August 1942, Ravilious traveled to Iceland to continue his work. On 2 September, he joined a rescue mission aboard a Lockheed Hudson aircraft. The plane went missing off the Icelandic coast, and he was never recovered. Ravilious was one of three official War Artists to lose their lives in action during the conflict, alongside Thomas Hennell and Albert Richards. Today, he is commemorated at the Chatham Naval Memorial, a poignant reminder of the risks taken by those tasked with recording history from the front lines.
