In short: In 2017, Astana hosted an international exposition centered on the future of energy. Beyond the temporary pavilions, the event catalyzed a long-term urban transformation. Today, the site serves as a permanent center for education, finance, and technology, proving that a global exhibition can leave a lasting, functional legacy.

Astana was selected to host Expo 2017 by the Bureau International des Expositions in November 2012, defeating the Belgian city of Liège with 103 votes to 44. The event, which ran from June 10 to September 10, 2017, focused on the theme of Future Energy. It marked a significant milestone as the first major international exhibition hosted by a former Soviet nation, drawing over 3.86 million visitors—a figure that surpassed initial expectations.

The planning and construction phase was extensive, involving 25 hectares of space and a global network of architects and contractors. While the project faced challenges, including the 2015 indictment of its organizing committee CEO, it successfully attracted over 115 states and 22 international organizations. Sponsorships from major corporations like Shell, Samsung, and Chevron contributed €125 million to the effort, while the administration simultaneously launched smart city initiatives to integrate digital technology into local payment, education, and healthcare systems.

The legacy of the event is rooted in the repurposing of its infrastructure. The grounds now serve as a commercial and research hub, anchored by the Astana International Financial Centre. The site also hosts the Astana IT University, which opened two years after the expo concluded. By converting pavilions into residential complexes, educational facilities, and spaces for blockchain and concurrency technology startups, the city has transitioned the temporary exhibition into a permanent engine for economic and technological development.
