In short: In 2021, two former Labor ministers revived a defunct political brand to launch a new conservative movement. While the name suggests a return to the past, the party’s modern platform blends traditional Judeo-Christian values with specific demands on energy, civil rights, and government scale.

The Family First Party (FFP) was established in 2021 by Jack Snelling and Tom Kenyon, who both departed the Labor Party. While the name was previously used by a party founded in 2002 by Andrew Evans, the new entity is a distinct political movement. It gained significant momentum by acquiring the original party's database of approximately 6,000 supporters and securing the release of associated intellectual property from former figures like Cory Bernardi. The party's ideological core is built on a Judeo-Christian-right platform. Key policies include the belief that human life begins at conception, opposition to abortion and euthanasia, and a desire to repeal same-sex marriage to restore it as a union between one man and one woman.

Beyond social issues, the party advocates for significant economic and environmental shifts, such as removing all restrictions on diesel vehicles, continuing coal use, and withdrawing Australia from the Paris Agreement. Despite its growth in membership and high-profile defections—including Deepa Mathew from the Liberal Party—the FFP has struggled to convert votes into legislative seats. In the 2024 Queensland state election, it secured 1.8% of the vote, and in the 2024 ACT election, it received 2.4%. While Chairman Tom Kenyon argues that the party is successfully moving the 'Christian vote' by achieving 5% to 10% swings in certain seats, it has yet to establish a permanent foothold in the Australian parliament.
