In short: Established during the final months of World War I, the First Army has served as the backbone of American military operations for over a century. From coordinating major offensives on the Western Front to managing complex mobilization and readiness missions today, its legacy spans the most significant conflicts in history.

The First Army was activated on August 10, 1918, under General John J. Pershing to manage American manpower on the Western Front. It played a pivotal role in the St. Mihiel Offensive and the Meuse–Argonne offensive, the latter being the deadliest battle in the history of the United States Army. Following the 1918 Armistice, the unit was inactivated in April 1919, only to be reconstituted in the Regular Army decades later as the military adapted to changing global needs.

Throughout the 20th century, the unit's mission shifted dramatically. During World War II, it spearheaded the invasion of Normandy, captured Cherbourg, and broke through German lines in Operation Cobra. By the 1990s, however, its focus had transitioned toward the support and training of National Guard and Army Reserve units. This evolution continued into the 21st century, with the 2006 reorganization splitting the command into Division East and Division West to oversee military readiness across the entire United States.

Beyond its combat history, the First Army is defined by its institutional identity. Its iconic insignia—a black letter 'A' on a red and white background—was finalized in 1950, though the 'A' itself dates back to 1918. The unit's motto, 'First In Deed,' reflects its long-standing role as a primary mobilization force. Whether providing disaster relief during Hurricane Katrina or preparing brigades for deployment, the First Army remains a central pillar of the American military structure, constantly adapting its headquarters and responsibilities to meet contemporary security challenges.

The unit's lineage is complex, marked by periods of inactivation and reorganization. It has operated from various locations, including Governors Island, Fort Gillem, and its current base at Rock Island Arsenal. Its history serves as a window into the broader transformation of the U.S. military from a wartime expeditionary force into a modern, globally integrated training and readiness organization.
