Forres: A Scottish market town with roots stretching back to the Neolithic era
In short: Forres is more than a picturesque market town on the Moray coast. Beneath its modern streets lies a deep history, from Iron Age settlements and Pictish stone monuments to a royal burgh status granted in the 12th century. Discover the layers of time that define this historic Scottish landmark.
Archaeological investigations conducted between 2002 and 2013 on the southern fringes of Forres revealed extensive human activity spanning from the Neolithic period to the Early Historic era. Excavations uncovered an Iron Age settlement featuring a rare souterrain and metalworking furnaces, alongside Bronze Age ceramics and ancient rock art. These findings provide a tangible link to the people who inhabited the region long before the town was formally established as a royal burgh around 1140 AD.
The town is also home to Sueno's Stone, a 20-foot tall carved stele dating from between 850 AD and 950 AD. Likely created by the Picts to commemorate a battle against Norse invaders, the monument is now protected by a glass structure. This historical depth is mirrored in the town's evolution, which saw the development of a royal castle by at least 900 AD and the eventual formalization of its rights under a Royal Charter issued by King James IV in 1496.
Beyond its ancient origins, Forres has played a significant role in Scottish culture and infrastructure. It was immortalized in William Shakespeare's Macbeth, which locates Duncan's castle in the town. In the modern era, the town has evolved into a hub for innovation, hosting a Glasgow School of Art campus, while maintaining its sporting heritage through clubs like Forres Mechanics, the oldest association football team in the North of Scotland, which has competed in the Highland League since 1893.
