The youngest interior minister in French history faced a dual legacy
In short: From a working-class background to the heights of the French cabinet, Gérald Darmanin’s rise is a study in political survival. Despite facing serious allegations of sexual coercion and harassment, he maintained his position under President Macron, navigating a career defined by fiscal reform and hardline security policies.
Born into a working-class family with Algerian and Maltese roots, Darmanin’s path to power was marked by academic struggle. After his parents could no longer afford private tuition in Paris, he finished his studies for free by working as a hall monitor. He eventually attended Sciences Po Lille, where he studied history alongside the daughter of the last King of Egypt. His early career was shaped by working as a parliamentary assistant and serving as chief of staff to David Douillet before entering the National Assembly in 2012 as one of the country's youngest lawmakers.
Darmanin’s ministerial career began in 2017 as Minister of Public Action and Accounts. In this role, he was tasked with significant fiscal oversight, aiming for 4.5 billion euros in savings and successfully bringing France's budget deficit below the EU-mandated 3 percent limit for the first time in a decade. He also managed high-profile negotiations, including a settlement with Google where the tech giant agreed to pay almost 1 billion euros to settle tax litigation regarding profit routing to Ireland.
His tenure as Minister of the Interior from 2020 to 2024 was defined by a hardline approach to security and radicalization. He ordered the closing of mosques and the dissolution of associations deemed 'separatist' following the murder of Samuel Paty. However, his career has been shadowed by two major sexual coercion cases. One complainant alleged he requested sexual favors in exchange for social housing while he was Mayor of Tourcoing, while another alleged a non-consensual encounter in 2009. Despite these allegations and public protests from women's rights activists, Macron stood by him during the 2022 UEFA Champions League final chaos, even strengthening his powers.
Now serving as Minister of Justice in the Bayrou government as of December 2024, Darmanin remains a polarizing figure. He has openly criticized gender studies and same-sex marriage while expressing ambitions to become president. His political identity is a blend of conservative roots and a pragmatic, often controversial, approach to state authority.
