In short: How does a territory representing just 1.4% of a nation's land area become its most populous and urbanized hub? The Greater Accra Region defies geographic scale, packing nearly 18% of Ghana's total population into a dense metropolitan corridor defined by rapid administrative expansion.

The Greater Accra Region serves as a masterclass in demographic density. Covering only 3,245 square kilometres, it is the smallest of Ghana's 16 administrative regions. Despite this limited footprint, it is the nation's most populated area, home to 5,455,692 people as of 2021. This concentration is driven by intense urbanization; a staggering 87.4% of the region's residents live in urban centers, making it the most urbanized zone in the country.

This rapid growth has necessitated constant administrative restructuring. In 1960, the area was merely the Accra Capital District within the Eastern Region. It wasn't until July 23, 1982, that it became a legally separate region. Since then, the local government system has expanded aggressively to manage the population. The number of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) surged from just 3 in 1988 to 29 by 2018, reflecting the need to decentralize governance across its many constituencies.

The region's identity is a complex tapestry of history and migration. While the Ga people are the historical population of Accra—organized into six independent towns with traditional stools—they now make up about 18.9% to 29.7% of the population depending on specific metrics. The Akan people currently form the largest group at 39.8%. This melting pot preserves deep cultural memories, such as the Homowo festival, which commemorates a 16th-century famine, and the Asafotu festival, a warrior's memorial for the Adangbe people.
