In short: Syed Fazl-ul-Hasan, known as Hasrat Mohani, was a complex figure who balanced deep religious devotion with communist activism. A fierce champion of Indian independence, he coined the iconic slogan Inquilab Zindabad in 1921. Despite his pivotal role in the freedom struggle, he remained a man of radical, uncompromising principles.

Born in 1875 in the town of Mohan, Mohani was a brilliant student who excelled in mathematics and literature. His political life was defined by constant friction with British authorities; he was expelled from Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College three times for his criticisms and spent years in prison, where he was forced to perform manual labor alongside common criminals. His magazine, Urdu-e-Mualla, became a vehicle for his anti-British sentiments, particularly regarding policies in Egypt, leading to further imprisonment.

Mohani was a visionary who stood apart from his contemporaries. In 1921, he became the first person to demand complete independence for India at the Ahmedabad Session of the Indian National Congress. After independence, he rejected the partition of the country and proposed a confederal set-up modeled on the USSR, consisting of six federations. Though he served in the Constituent Assembly that drafted the Indian Constitution, he famously refused to sign the final document, maintaining his independent stance until his death in 1951.

His personal life was as unconventional as his politics. A practicing Muslim who performed Hajj multiple times, he also expressed deep love for Krishna and frequently traveled to Mathura for Janmashtami. He lived with extreme austerity, refusing government allowances or official housing, preferring to stay in mosques and travel by shared transport. Even when asked why he rode in third-class train carriages, he wryly replied that it was only because there was no fourth class available.
