Heat pumps don't create energy; they move it with extreme efficiency

In short: Most people think of heaters as devices that generate warmth from fuel. Heat pumps flip the script by acting as high-tech transport systems for thermal energy. By moving heat rather than creating it, they can produce three units of warmth for every single unit of electricity consumed.

The fundamental mechanism of a heat pump relies on thermodynamics and the movement of refrigerant gas. It begins by capturing ambient heat from an external source—such as air, ground, or water—and passing it through a heat exchanger. The refrigerant absorbs this energy, increasing its temperature as it moves toward a compressor.

Inside the compressor, pressure is applied to the gas, which significantly raises its temperature. This high-temperature gas then passes through a second heat exchanger. Here, the thermal energy is transferred into the water that circulates through a building's radiators, underfloor heating systems, or hot water cylinders. Because they intensify existing environmental heat rather than burning fuel to create new heat, these appliances are considered highly efficient electric systems.

In the UK, air source heat pumps are currently the most common variety installed for residential use. While the technology significantly reduces energy demand compared to traditional gas boilers, actual financial savings depend on operational efficiency and local energy prices. For instance, a typical gas household might save around £234 per year when utilizing smart electricity tariffs and removing their gas meter.

Transitioning to this technology involves significant upfront investment, with total costs ranging from approximately £6,500 to £11,500 including VAT and labor. However, government initiatives like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offer a £7,500 grant, which can sometimes make the installation cost lower than that of an average gas boiler.
