The ghostly phenomenon that allows the sun to shine

How Quantum Tunneling Works. It's the Reason Life Exists! · 12:35 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: In our everyday world, a ball cannot pass through a solid wall. But in the quantum realm, particles can simply appear on the other side. This process, known as quantum tunneling, defies classical logic and provides the fundamental mechanism for nuclear fusion in the stars.

Quantum tunneling is rooted in the wave-particle duality of matter. According to quantum mechanics, particles like electrons do not exist at precise points; instead, they behave like probability waves. These waves are described by a wave function, which can exist across all space. Because the wave function has a non-zero value even beyond physical barriers, there is always a statistical probability that a particle will be detected on the other side of a wall. This behavior is governed by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, which dictates that we cannot know a particle's position and momentum with perfect certainty simultaneously. In 1926, Erwin Schrödinger developed the Schrödinger equation to describe these wave functions. The equation treats energy as an operator acting on the wave function, showing that while a particle might lack the energy to climb over a potential barrier, it can still 'tunnel' through it because its probability wave extends into the forbidden zone.

While this happens constantly at the subatomic level, it is negligible for large objects. For a macro object like a human hand, the mass is so great that the probability of tunneling through a wall is roughly 10^-40—a number with more zeros than there are atoms in the human body. However, at the scale of atoms, tunneling is vital. It allows hydrogen nuclei to overcome the intense Coulomb potential—the electrical repulsion between positive charges—to fuse into helium. Without this quantum shortcut, the sun would not have ignited, and life on Earth would not exist.

This phenomenon also presents a modern engineering crisis. As transistors in electronic devices shrink, the barriers between components become so thin that electrons begin to tunnel through them unintentionally. This 'leakage' creates a significant roadblock in the development of smaller, more powerful microchips, proving that the same mechanism that powers the stars also limits our current technology.
