The universe may forbid your return but permits a journey forward
In short: You are currently traveling through time, but only in one direction. While Einstein's equations allow for a leap into the far future via extreme velocity or gravity, returning to the past remains a theoretical minefield of singularities and missing matter.
Time travel into the future is an established physical reality governed by time dilation. According to Einstein’s principles, traveling at speeds approaching the speed of light—or residing near massive gravitational sources—causes time to slow down relative to an observer on Earth. Theoretically, a traveler moving at nearly the speed of light could experience just one day while ten years pass for those remaining behind.
Traveling into the past is far more complex due to logical paradoxes like the "grandfather paradox," where a traveler prevents their own birth. To address this, the Hawking chronology protection conjecture suggests that such paradoxes cannot exist in nature. However, some theories suggest you could return to your own past without changing it; because the events are already "written in stone," you would simply relive them exactly as they occurred, with no ability to alter information or history.
Three theoretical methods for backward travel exist but require currently unattainable components. Caroline Mallary proposed using two parallel spaceships and a bare singularity of infinite density to fold space-time into a loop. Professor Ben Tippett proposed the "TARDIS" (Traversable Acausal Retrograde Domain in Space-time), which uses negative matter—a particle not yet discovered—to bend space-time into a circle. Finally, Einstein’s equations suggest that if one could break the speed of light barrier, time would flow backward, as his math does not preclude a reverse trajectory.
Despite these theories, significant hurdles remain. We currently lack the technology to create singularities or locate negative matter. Furthermore, while physics equations apply to both forward and backward flows, our current limitation is tied to the fact that time stops completely at the speed of light, creating a singularity.
