In short: In November 1857, photographer Robert Howlett captured Isambard Kingdom Brunel standing before the massive chains of the SS Great Eastern. With his waistcoat askew and boots caked in mud, the engineer’s casual, self-assured stance became an enduring symbol of 19th-century industrial ambition and the grit required to build giants.

The photograph was commissioned by the Illustrated Times to document the launch of the SS Great Eastern, a vessel of unprecedented scale. Measuring 692 feet in length and weighing 22,500 long tons, the ship was six times the tonnage of any previous vessel. Its construction in Millwall was a monumental undertaking that faced significant financial and technical hurdles, including a difficult launch process that required the ship to be lowered sideways down a timber ramp over three months.

Robert Howlett, a partner at The Photographic Institution, used the wet plate collodion technique to capture the scene. This process required immediate development, likely in a portable darkroom tent on-site. Howlett took several shots, but the image of Brunel standing before a chain-restraint drum became iconic. Brunel’s disheveled appearance—muddy boots, askew waistcoat, and cigar—was not a staged performance but a reflection of his hands-on involvement in the project’s daily struggles.

The image served as vital publicity for a project plagued by delays. After Brunel’s death in 1859, the photograph was widely distributed, cementing his legacy as a figure of swaggering confidence. Today, the photograph is held by institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, serving as a testament to the era of rapid engineering progress that continues to inspire modern innovation, such as the recent launch of the Isambard-AI supercomputer in Bristol, named in his honor.
