Mac OS 8 was a commercial triumph born from the ashes of a failed project.
In short: Released in 1997, Mac OS 8 sold 1.2 million copies in just two weeks. It was a vital bridge for Apple, integrating features from the abandoned Copland project while the company scrambled to find a modern operating system foundation that would eventually evolve into the modern macOS.
In 1988, Apple began developing a next-generation operating system codenamed Copland, envisioned as a complete rewrite of the Mac OS. By 1996, despite a $250 million annual budget and 500 engineers, the project was plagued by missed deadlines. Apple eventually froze development, leading to the acquisition of NeXT and the birth of the platform that became Mac OS X. To sustain the market in the interim, Apple pivoted to a six-month release cycle, integrating Copland's planned features into the existing system.
Mac OS 8.0, released in July 1997, introduced the Platinum interface, a multithreaded Finder, and greater UI customization. It was a significant departure from the incremental updates of System 7. Subsequent versions brought further modernization: Mac OS 8.1 introduced the HFS+ file system and DVD support, while Mac OS 8.5 became the first version to require a PowerPC processor, dropping support for older 68k hardware. These updates were critical for maintaining performance and stability during a turbulent era for Apple.
The transition was not without technical hurdles. For instance, upgrading to HFS+ in Mac OS 8.1 required reformatting the hard drive, which erased all data unless third-party utilities were used. Later, Mac OS 8.6 introduced a nanokernel to handle preemptive tasks, though the system still relied on cooperative multitasking for most processes. Despite these challenges, the OS was a commercial success, with MacHome Journal praising it as a substantial upgrade that moved beyond the minor bug fixes of previous years.
