In short: Located in the heart of Philadelphia, the National Constitution Center functions as a national town hall. It is not a repository for the original documents, but a space designed to translate the complexities of the Constitution into public understanding through interactive exhibits and high-stakes political debates.

Established by the Constitution Heritage Act signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, the center was mandated to disseminate information about the U.S. Constitution on a non-partisan basis. Its primary goal is to increase public awareness and understanding of the founding document. The center's physical location at 525 Arch Street was specifically chosen because May 25 (5/25) marks the date the Constitutional Convention began in Philadelphia.

The facility opened on July 4, 2003, following a groundbreaking ceremony on the 213th anniversary of the Constitution's signing. Designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, the building is noted for being 'quiet but assertive' and respectful of its surroundings in Independence National Historical Park. It features 75,785 square feet of exhibit space and houses a four-story-tall stone panel inscribed with the First Amendment, which was donated by the Freedom Forum in 2021.

Beyond its role as a museum, the center serves as a major venue for political discourse. Major occasions occurred here, such as the 2008 Democratic presidential primary contest involving Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, plus the 2024 Presidential debate featuring Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Additionally, the center administers the Philadelphia Liberty Medal, an award established in 1988 to honor individuals who strive to secure the blessings of liberty globally.

The institution also functions as an educational hub through its Annenberg Center for Education and Outreach. This branch develops and distributes teaching tools, lesson plans, and resources for civic education. While the original Constitution remains in Washington, D.C., the center aims to provide a vision of constitutional history that both the left and right of the political spectrum can embrace.
