The James Webb Telescope is rewriting the timeline of our universe

NO HYPE Explanation of the 3 Biggest JWST Discoveries | Far Too Much BS About Webb Telescope on YT · 15:12 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: We expected to see faint, primitive hints of the first galaxies. Instead, the James Webb Space Telescope found mature, bright structures existing just 300 million years after the Big Bang. This discovery suggests the early universe was far more efficient at building complexity than our current models predicted.

The primary challenge in observing the early universe is 'redshift.' As the universe expands, the spacetime between objects stretches, lengthening the wavelengths of light traveling through it. For the most distant galaxies, this expansion stretches visible light into the infrared spectrum, making them invisible to traditional telescopes. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) was specifically engineered to capture this infrared light, allowing us to see back to the 'cosmic dawn'—the first billion years of existence.

One of JWST's most significant findings involves the speed of galactic evolution. According to the standard Lambda CDM model, large galaxies should form hierarchically: small clouds of gas condense into stars, which then cluster to form larger structures over vast periods. These galaxies appear more evolved than expected, posing a potential challenge to our understanding of dark matter, early dark energy fields, or the role of 'Population III' stars—massive, metal-free stars that could have burned quickly to form early black holes.

Beyond galaxy formation, JWST is utilizing 'gravitational lensing' to observe cosmic history in real-time. The supernova AT 2022riv, situated roughly 9 billion light years away, was photographed at three distinct moments at once by the telescope via gravitational lensing, where large cosmic objects warp light paths. Additionally, the telescope is revolutionizing exoplanet science by analyzing starlight passing through planetary atmospheres to determine chemical compositions, and even capturing direct images of these distant worlds.
