The James Webb Space Telescope is finding galaxies that should not exist

Astronomers Found Galaxies So Far Away They Can't Be Real · 15:57 · Video: Insane Curiosity · Watch at the source

In short: Astronomers are staring at the edge of the observable universe and seeing something impossible. Massive, bright, and chemically mature galaxies are appearing much earlier than our best cosmological models predicted, challenging the very timeline of how the first stars and structures formed.

For many years, theories of steady expansion formed the basis of our knowledge regarding the 'Cosmic Dawn'—that era occurring within the initial few hundred million years following the Big Bang. However, data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is complicating this narrative. The telescope has revealed galaxies that appear far too large, bright, and organized for their extreme age. For instance, the galaxy cluster XLSSC 122 appears surprisingly massive and structured so early in cosmic history, while other early galaxies show a level of chemical maturity that was unexpected.

One of the most significant recent discoveries is the galaxy JADES-GS-z14-0. Using the Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) as part of the JADES program, astronomers identified this source at a redshift of approximately 14.32. This places the galaxy at a time when the universe was less than 300 million years old. Another notable object, MoM-z14, was observed shining when the universe was only about 280 million years old. These findings are particularly striking because the light from such distant objects is stretched by the expansion of the universe, a phenomenon known as redshift.

The implications of these 'universe breakers' are profound. Some candidate massive galaxies observed between 500 and 800 million years after the Big Bang appear to contain as many stars as our modern-day Milky Way, yet they are roughly 30 times more compact. While these discoveries do not necessarily mean that modern cosmology is collapsing, they suggest that our current models are missing vital information regarding how gas, stars, and black holes interacted in the early universe. Scientists are now left to reconcile these massive, mature structures with a timeline that previously suggested a much more primitive era.
