Is gravity just a holographic projection of quantum information?

One Theory Connects Everything! AdS/CFT Correspondence Demystified · 15:31 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: What if the fundamental fabric of our universe is not space and time, but something much simpler? The AdS/CFT correspondence suggests that gravity might be an emergent phenomenon—a macroscopic illusion created by the underlying patterns of quantum entanglement in a lower-dimensional world.

The AdS/CFT correspondence, first discovered by physicist Juan Maldacena in 1997, proposes a mathematical equivalence between two seemingly unrelated types of physics. On one side is Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space—a theoretical universe with negative curvature and gravity, described by string theory. On the other is Conformal Field Theory (CFT), a quantum field theory that exists on the boundary of that space. Crucially, CFT lacks gravity entirely and operates in one fewer dimension than the AdS bulk.

To visualize this, imagine a snow globe: the interior contains planets and people (the bulk), while the glass represents the boundary. The correspondence posits that the 3D world inside is perfectly modeled by the 2D surface of the glass. This is known as the holographic principle. It suggests that a gravity-filled universe can be described exactly by a system of particles and fields in flat spacetime that obey ordinary quantum mechanics without any gravitational force.

The mechanism behind this transition lies in quantum entanglement. Modern research indicates that the connectivity and shape of the spacetime geometry in the AdS bulk are built from the patterns of entanglement within the CFT. No single quantum in the boundary theory corresponds to gravity; instead, the interactions between entangled particles create the effect of smooth curved spacetime. This implies that space, time, and gravity are not fundamental building blocks but emergent properties.

While our actual universe is expanding and possesses positive curvature (de Sitter space) rather than the negative curvature of AdS, this duality offers a profound roadmap for physics. If true, it suggests that Einstein’s equations emerge from quantum information principles and that gravitons do not exist at the fundamental level. By treating gravity as an emergent phenomenon, scientists hope to finally unite all four fundamental forces into a single theory of everything.
