From the shadow cabinet to the pharmaceutical boardroom: the career of Owen Smith
In short: Owen Smith, a former Labour MP for Pontypridd, navigated a career spanning broadcasting, political lobbying, and frontbench opposition. After challenging Jeremy Corbyn for the Labour leadership in 2016, he eventually left Parliament to return to the pharmaceutical industry, where he now holds a senior executive role in Australia.
Born in 1970, Owen Smith spent a decade as a producer for the BBC before transitioning into political advisory and lobbying roles, notably for Pfizer and Amgen. His parliamentary career began in 2010 when he was elected as the Labour MP for Pontypridd. Over the next nine years, he held several shadow cabinet positions, including Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, and Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.
Smith’s political trajectory was marked by his 2016 challenge to Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership of the Labour Party. Following the EU referendum, Smith resigned from the shadow cabinet, citing concerns over Corbyn's leadership, and subsequently contested the leadership election. He was defeated by Corbyn, who secured 61.8% of the vote compared to Smith’s 38.2%. Despite his loss, Smith remained active on the frontbench until 2018, when he was dismissed for publicly advocating for a second Brexit referendum, a position that diverged from official Labour policy at the time.
After deciding not to stand for reelection in 2019, Smith returned to the corporate sector. He joined the pharmaceutical company Bristol Myers Squibb, initially serving as their UK government relations director. By 2024, he had been promoted to vice president and General Manager of the company's Australia and New Zealand division, leading to his relocation to Melbourne. His career reflects a recurring movement between the worlds of high-level political strategy and the private pharmaceutical industry.
