How a former Labour MP became a government advisor on antisemitism and a peer
In short: John Mann, a long-serving Labour MP for Bassetlaw, built a career defined by aggressive local campaigning and high-profile clashes with his own party leadership. From tackling heroin addiction to confronting colleagues over antisemitism, Mann eventually left the Commons to serve as an independent government advisor before entering the House of Lords.
Born in 1960, John Mann spent nearly two decades as the Labour MP for Bassetlaw, beginning his tenure in 2001. His political style was marked by a confrontational approach to both local and national issues. Early in his career, he launched an inquiry into heroin use in his constituency, which successfully shifted local policy toward treatment options. This initiative reportedly saw the number of addicts in treatment rise from 2 to 400, while acquisitive crime in the area fell by 75%.
Mann became increasingly known for his public disputes with Labour leadership, particularly Jeremy Corbyn. He was a vocal critic of Corbyn’s handling of antisemitism allegations, famously confronting Ken Livingstone in 2016 and calling him a Nazi apologist. By 2019, Mann declared that he would never forgive Corbyn for allowing the party to be hijacked by bigots. His political independence also extended to Brexit; he was one of the few Labour MPs to vote in support of Theresa May’s withdrawal agreement, citing the preferences of his leave-voting constituency.
His career trajectory shifted in 2019 when he resigned his Commons seat to become the UK Government's independent advisor on antisemitism. Shortly thereafter, he was nominated for a life peerage by Theresa May. This appointment faced scrutiny from an independent watchdog, which warned it could be perceived as a reward for his support of the Brexit bill. Despite this, he was created Baron Mann in October 2019. Today, he remains active in the House of Lords, having retaken the Labour whip in 2024, while his wife, Jo White, has succeeded him as the MP for Bassetlaw.
