Your body’s defense system can become its own worst enemy

In short: Inflammation is a biological paradox. It is the essential mechanism that saves your life during an infection, yet it can also be the primary driver of long-term disease. Understanding the line between healing and harm is key to understanding how our bodies maintain balance.

At its core, inflammation is a coordinated defense system. When your body detects an invader—such as a virus, bacteria, or toxic chemicals—or experiences physical damage like a paper cut, it deploys an army of infection-fighting cells and proteins. These first responders, along with signaling substances called cytokines, work to trap germs, destroy damaging substances, and begin the healing process. This response is often visible through the classic signs of redness, heat, pain, and swelling.

The primary distinction lies in the duration and purpose of the response. Acute inflammation is the body's immediate, usually helpful reaction to a specific threat. It is designed to be temporary, typically resolving within a few hours to a few days as the immune system returns the affected area to a state of balance. For example, a bacterial infection like strep throat or a viral infection like the flu triggers this rapid, protective cycle.

The danger arises when inflammation becomes chronic, persisting for months or years. This can happen if the body cannot rid itself of a persistent threat, such as a chronic hepatitis C infection, or if the immune system enters a permanent 'threat mode' without an actual invader. In cases like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, the body begins to break down its own healthy tissues instead of healing them. Furthermore, lifestyle factors including smoking, poor diet, and weight gain can contribute to this persistent, low-level inflammation that harms health over time.
