The fundamental logic of systems: how parts create a whole
In short: Understanding systems begins with recognizing how individual components interact to function as a single unit. This video introduces a foundational conceptual framework for analyzing both natural and designed objects.
The lesson explores the relationship between 'parts'—individual pieces of an object or organism—and 'systems,' which are sets of these components working in concert. The NRC's 'A Framework for K-12 Science Education' provides the Crosscutting Concepts upon which this method is founded.
By identifying how components cooperate, students can better understand the complexity of the world around them. The video provides two specific examples of these interactions, while additional examples are provided in accompanying thinking slides to illustrate the concept across different contexts.
