The universe isn't made of particles, but of invisible fluids

QFT: What is the universe really made of? Quantum Field Theory visualized · 14:57 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: Most science classes teach us that everything is built from tiny particles. In reality, physicists have known for decades that particles are not fundamental. Instead, the true building blocks of our universe are fields—fluid-like substances that permeate every inch of space.

Grasping Quantum Field Theory (QFT) requires discarding the notion of 'matter.' From a purely physical perspective, mathematicians describe a field as an entity possessing a specific value throughout every spatial coordinate. Think of a room with a fireplace: every coordinate in that room has a specific temperature. That distribution of values constitutes a temperature field. In our universe, there are approximately 17 different types of these fields, which can be visualized as differently colored fluids filling the entire volume of the cosmos.

The reason we perceive 'particles' is due to excitations within these fields. Because of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, these fields cannot remain still; they are constantly vibrating and changing values. However, because QFT combines continuous fields with quantum mechanics, these vibrations can only happen in discrete chunks of energy. A particle, such as an electron or a quark, is essentially just a wave in its respective field that carries a specific amount of energy. The 'mass' we measure for a particle is actually the minimum threshold of energy required to make that specific field vibrate.

This framework solves several profound mysteries in physics. It explains how particles are created and destroyed—such as when a neutron decays into a proton, electron, and antineutrino by transferring vibrations between different fields. It also eliminates 'action at a distance.' Instead of the sun affecting the earth instantly across 120 million kilometers, forces propagate locally through the field from point to point. While we have identified 17 fields including the Higgs, space-time itself remains a potential 18th field that has yet to be fully incorporated into QFT.
