The universe is not made of particles, but of oceans

Quantum Fields: The Most Beautiful Theory in Physics! · 14:31 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: We often imagine the world as a collection of tiny billiard balls moving through empty space. But modern physics suggests a more profound reality: everything is actually an excitation in an invisible, universal field. To understand matter, we must look past the particle to the ocean.

Quantum Mechanics (QM) was a revolutionary leap that solved the 'orbiting electron' problem of classical physics. It showed that electrons don't spiral into nuclei but exist as probability clouds described by wavefunctions. However, QM has two fundamental limitations: it is not relativistic, and it cannot account for the creation or destruction of particles. Because it ignores the speed limit of light, QM theoretically allows for causality violations where the future could influence the past. Furthermore, it fails to explain processes like beta decay, where one particle transforms into others.

Quantum Field Theory (QFT) resolves these issues by merging classical field theory, special relativity, and quantum mechanics. In this framework, every fundamental particle in the Standard Model is actually an excitation of its own underlying field. These fields are not localized; they extend across all of spacetime, existing everywhere including inside the human body. Even in their lowest energy state—the ground state—these fields are not empty. They are teeming with 'virtual particles,' which are pairs of particles and antiparticles that are constantly created and destroyed.

To visualize this, imagine an ocean. The field is the water, always present regardless of whether there are waves. The turbulence in the ocean represents the constant activity of virtual particles. When enough energy is introduced to a field, it creates a larger wave that can be measured; these measurable waves are what we perceive as real particles. Interactions and forces occur when energy is transferred between these fields via mediating boson fields, as matter particles cannot interact with one another directly without such a mediator.
