A global database integrates deep-sequencing data with thousands of microRNA sequences
In short: Researchers have updated miRBase, the primary online repository for microRNA sequences, to incorporate large-scale deep-sequencing data. By mapping millions of reads from various experiments to over 17,000 distinct mature microRNAs across more than 140 species, the database now allows scientists to visualize expression patterns and verify existing genetic annotations.
This integration helps researchers use sequencing data as a proxy for relative expression levels and identify alternative isoforms of microRNAs. It also provides a way to re-evaluate previous annotations based on new evidence.
The study describes the development of web interfaces for these mappings but does not specify a particular experimental trial or sample size beyond the scope of the database's contents.
Why it matters: This tool allows scientists to see how thousands of different genetic regulators behave across hundreds of different species.
