How a massive Singaporean resort transformed from a construction site into a global landmark
In short: Spanning 50 hectares, Resorts World Sentosa is a colossal integrated complex that redefined Singapore's tourism landscape. Developed at a cost of S$6.59 billion, this architectural feat houses everything from high-stakes casinos to world-class theme parks, serving as a testament to rapid urban development and large-scale engineering in Southeast Asia.
Conceived in 2006 and built on the site of the former Imbiah Lookout, Resorts World Sentosa represents a significant investment in Singapore's infrastructure. Construction began in April 2007, and within just 34 months, the resort began its phased opening. By the time of its grand opening on December 7, 2012, it had established itself as a major hub for leisure, business, and international events, including hosting the 2024 World Chess Championship where Gukesh Dommaraju became the youngest titleholder at age 18.
The resort's design, led by architect Michael Graves, integrates six distinct hotels offering 1,840 rooms across three zones. The central zone features the casino, located beneath the 11-storey Crockfords Tower, which also houses private high-roller facilities. Beyond gaming, the site includes Universal Studios Singapore—the first of its kind in Southeast Asia—and the Singapore Oceanarium, currently ranked as the world's second-largest. These attractions are complemented by specialized venues like the Maritime Experiential Museum, which previously showcased maritime trade history through interactive exhibits.
Despite its success, the resort has faced operational challenges, including regulatory scrutiny and the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic. In 2011, the Casino Regulatory Authority imposed a S$530,000 fine for surveillance and reimbursement violations. More recently, the pandemic's effect on tourism led to a shortened two-year renewal of the casino license for 2025–2027. Nevertheless, the resort continues to evolve, with recent updates like the 2025 opening of The Laurus, replacing the former Hard Rock Hotel, ensuring the complex remains a central pillar of Singapore's tourism strategy.
