The man who guided India to the lunar south pole
In short: S. Somanath led ISRO through a historic era of lunar exploration and satellite deployment. From mastering structural dynamics to spearheading the Chandrayaan-3 mission, his tenure is defined by a legacy of technical milestones and the complex navigation of science, leadership, and public perception.
S. Somanath took the helm of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in January 2022, concluding a three-year tenure in January 2025. During this period, he oversaw the Chandrayaan-3 mission, which successfully landed the Vikram lander and Pragyan rover near the lunar south pole on August 23, 2023. This achievement made India the first country to reach that specific region and the fourth nation to demonstrate a soft landing on the Moon.
Somanath’s expertise is rooted in launch vehicle systems engineering, specifically structural dynamics and pyrotechnics. His career trajectory includes leadership roles at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) and the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC). He was instrumental in the development of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk-III) and the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle project. His technical contributions have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Sabitha Choudhuri Gold Medal in 1994 and the ISRO Outstanding Achievement Award in 2019.
His leadership has not been without friction. In 2023, Somanath faced scrutiny over a Malayalam memoir that reportedly contained remarks about his predecessor, K. Sivan, leading him to withdraw the book. Additionally, his public comments regarding the role of Sanskrit in India’s history and the naming of landing sites sparked debate with organizations like the Breakthrough Science society, which argued for a stricter separation between scientific reasoning and cultural belief. Despite these controversies, his tenure is cited by media as one of the best in ISRO's history, marked by the Aditya-L1 launch and progress on the Gaganyaan mission.
