From homelessness to global bestseller: the turbulent life of author Sherrilyn Kenyon
In short: Sherrilyn Kenyon is a prolific American writer whose Dark-Hunter series has sold over 70 million copies worldwide. Yet, her path to literary success was marked by extreme poverty, a period of homelessness, and a high-profile legal battle involving allegations of systematic poisoning that captivated the public in 2019.
Born in Columbus, Georgia, in 1965, Kenyon’s early life was defined by hardship and instability. Following her parents' divorce when she was eight, she lived with her grandparents. Despite these challenges, she found solace in writing, which she began in high school as a form of therapy. Her interest in the paranormal and science fiction was nurtured by her mother, providing a creative outlet that would eventually define her career.
Kenyon’s journey to professional success was far from linear. After moving to Jackson, Mississippi, with her husband in 1990, the couple faced severe financial ruin, at one point living out of their car. It was only after securing an apartment that she could return to her craft. While she had published her first story in 1975 and worked for the magazine Cutting Edge in the mid-1980s, her major breakthrough arrived in 1999 with a three-book deal from St. Martin's Press for her Dark-Hunter sequence.
The author’s personal life took a dramatic turn in 2019 when she filed a lawsuit against her husband, alleging he had poisoned her with heavy metals like lithium, tin, and barium since 2015. Her husband, who had filed for divorce in 2018, denied the claims, suggesting she struggled to distinguish between fiction and reality. The lawsuit was dropped in July 2019, leaving the public with a stark contrast between her celebrated, expansive fictional universes and the intense, unresolved conflicts of her private life.
