The evolutionary puzzle of how turtles first grew their shells

Slowly Solving the Mystery of Turtle Origins · 7:29 · Video: SciShow · Watch at the source

In short: For centuries, scientists have struggled to place turtles on the tree of life. While DNA suggests a modern lineage, fossils tell a different story. New research is finally reconciling these two perspectives, revealing that turtles are much older and more closely related to dinosaurs than we once thought.

The mystery of turtle origins stems from a conflict between genetic data and the fossil record. Molecular studies have long identified turtles as close relatives of archosaurs—the group containing modern birds, crocodiles, and extinct dinosaurs. However, many physical fossils suggested that turtles branched off much earlier from a more primitive reptilian lineage, creating a significant gap in our understanding of their evolutionary path.

A major source of this confusion was the small reptile Eunotosaurus africanus, which lived approximately 260 million years ago during the Middle Permian. Because it possessed wide, flattened ribs that resembled an early shell, researchers once hypothesized it was a 'proto-turtle' bridging the gap between primitive reptiles and modern species. If this were true, it would mean turtles originated from an older branch of reptiles, potentially pushing back the timeline for the entire reptile class.

Recent analysis has corrected this narrative. By examining a new specimen of Eunotosaurus discovered in 2016, researchers identified specific skull features that proved the animal belonged to an entirely different group rather than being a turtle ancestor. This discovery aligns the fossil record with genetic evidence: turtles do belong to the archosaur group but occupy a very basal position within it.

This shift allows scientists to more accurately constrain the timing of their emergence. Evidence indicates turtles first appeared roughly 255 million years prior, near the Permian period's conclusion. By resolving this discrepancy, paleontologists have clarified how these iconic shelled creatures successfully integrated into the archosaur lineage.
