In short: Southwest Airlines operates one of the world's largest fleets using only Boeing 737s. By standardizing its aircraft, the airline slashes training costs, simplifies spare parts inventory, and ensures any pilot can fly any plane in the fleet. This strategic uniformity has defined their operations since their very first flight in 1971.

Southwest Airlines began its journey on June 18, 1971, with three Boeing 737-200 aircraft. While the airline briefly operated six Boeing 727-200s during the late 1970s and early 1980s, it has otherwise remained an exclusive operator of the Boeing 737 family. This commitment to a single aircraft type is a core operational philosophy. By avoiding a mixed fleet, Southwest eliminates the need for specialized training for different aircraft types and streamlines the logistics of maintaining spare parts, significantly reducing overhead costs.

The airline’s history is marked by its role as a launch customer for numerous 737 variants, including the 737-300, 737-500, 737-700, and the 737 MAX series. The 737-300, for instance, was developed specifically to meet Southwest's requirements for greater range and capacity on routes between Texas and the western United States. Over the decades, the fleet has evolved from the early 737-200s to the modern 737 MAX 8. As of June 2026, the airline operates 803 aircraft and aims to transition to an all-737 MAX fleet by 2031.

Operational challenges, such as the 737 MAX grounding that began in 2019, have tested this strategy. When the FAA ended the grounding in November 2020, Southwest had to retrain its entire pilot workforce to resume operations. Despite such hurdles, the airline remains committed to the 737. With over 400 MAX aircraft currently on order, Southwest continues to leverage the economies of scale provided by its uniform fleet, maintaining its position as the largest 737 operator globally.
