The universe's most successful theory predicts that we shouldn't exist

Standard Model of Particle Physics Explains Everything Except THIS · 5:45 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: The Standard Model is a masterpiece of physics, accurately describing the building blocks of everything from stars to your own body. Yet, it contains a glaring omission: it completely ignores gravity. Even more startling, current calculations suggest that according to our best model, the universe shouldn't exist at all.

The Standard Model is a framework combining electroweak theory and quantum chromodynamics to describe subatomic interactions. It identifies 12 elementary particles known as fermions—six quarks and six leptons arranged in three generations of increasing mass. These building blocks form everyday matter: up and down quarks create protons and neutrons, while electrons bind atoms into molecules. The model also includes gauge bosons, which act as 'messenger' particles to mediate forces. For instance, photons carry the electromagnetic force, gluons mediate the strong force binding atomic nuclei, and W and Z bosons handle the weak force responsible for radioactive decay.

Despite its success, the model faces a fundamental crisis because it excludes gravity. While other forces are explained through the exchange of particles (quantization), gravity may be fundamentally different. According to general relativity, gravity is not just an interaction between objects but a geometric curvature of space and time. Because only gravity appears to bend the fabric of reality rather than just moving particles through it, physicists struggle to integrate it into a quantum framework. Even if a theoretical particle called a 'graviton' were discovered, it might not fully resolve how gravity functions at its core.

The model also has significant limitations: it cannot explain why there are three generations of particles, nor can it predict their masses or the specific strengths of their interactions. To bridge these gaps, scientists look toward a 'grand unified theory' to merge the strong, weak, and electromagnetic forces into one structure. While theories like string theory and loop quantum gravity attempt to provide a quantum theory of gravity by requiring the existence of gravitons, they currently lack testable predictions, leaving them as sophisticated mathematical constructs rather than proven physical laws.
