The invisible glue overcoming the universe's most violent electrical repulsions

In short: Protons are positively charged, meaning they should naturally repel one another with intense force. Yet, they cluster together to form the heart of every atom in existence. This paradox is resolved by the strong nuclear force, the most powerful interaction in physics, which acts as the universe's primary structural adhesive.

The stability of matter depends on a constant tug-of-war between two fundamental forces. On one side is the electromagnetic force, which causes protons—the positively charged particles in an atom's nucleus—to push away from each other. Without a counteracting power, nuclei would instantly fly apart, making the existence of any element heavier than hydrogen impossible. This electromagnetic interaction is what allows for the formation of chemical compounds. It also keeps electrons in orbit around atomic nuclei. Because it works at an infinite range, its influence can be felt across vast distances.

The solution lies in the strong nuclear force. This interaction is significantly more powerful than electromagnetism at very short distances, effectively overcoming the electrostatic repulsion to bind nucleons together. The mechanism operates on two distinct levels: within the individual nucleons (protons and neutrons), gluons are exchanged between quarks to maintain their internal structure. Between the nucleons themselves, mesons are exchanged to keep the entire nucleus intact. The strong nuclear force accounts for the binding energy found in every atom. This interaction is one of four fundamental forces that shape our universe. It serves as a primary mechanism for holding atoms and nuclei together at their most basic level.

While gravity is the most famous force for shaping galaxies and keeping planets in orbit, it is actually the weakest of the four fundamental forces. In contrast, the strong nuclear force is responsible for the binding energy of all atoms. It represents a primary architectural principle of reality: at the smallest scales, intense local interactions dictate the macroscopic stability of everything we see. Gravity operates by creating bends and curves in the fabric of space-time. The strength of this force decreases with the square of the distance between objects. In comparison, gravity is responsible for keeping our feet on the ground.
