In short: Founded in 1947 to train medical secretaries, Stevenson University has undergone a radical transformation. Once a small, women-only commuter college, it now operates two major campuses, hosts nearly 4,000 students, and offers over 90 academic programs. This evolution reflects a deliberate shift toward career-focused education and expansive athletic growth.

Stevenson University began as Villa Julie College, established by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur to provide one-year vocational training for women. For decades, the institution remained modest, only achieving accreditation as a two-year college in 1954. A pivotal shift occurred in 1972 when the college became coeducational, followed by the introduction of bachelor’s degree programs in 1984. By the 1990s, the school began shedding its commuter-only identity, eventually securing NCAA Division III status in 1994 and launching its first master’s programs in 1995.

The transition to university status in 2008 marked a broader strategic pivot. Leadership considered several names, including Greenspring and Rockland, before settling on Stevenson to honor the local geography and historical figures. This era saw massive infrastructure investment, most notably the development of the Owings Mills campus. The university acquired the former Rosewood Center property in 2017, nearly doubling its total acreage. Today, the campus features specialized facilities like the Kevin J. Manning Academic Center, which houses the Beverly K. Fine School of the Sciences, and the Caves Sports and Wellness Center, a former training site for the Baltimore Colts.

Beyond academics, Stevenson has cultivated a distinct extracurricular culture. The university was the first NCAA Division III institution to sponsor women’s beach volleyball and has aggressively expanded its athletic offerings to 29 sports, including the recent addition of acrobatics and tumbling. The school’s career-centric model is underscored by its reported 92 percent employment or graduate school placement rate within six months of graduation. By blending traditional liberal arts cores with professional minors like cybersecurity and digital forensics, the university aims to bridge the gap between undergraduate study and professional success for its diverse student body.
