The universe might be a symphony played on hidden dimensions

String Theory Simplified: A bunch of BS? Or Answers Why Do We Exist? · 6:18 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: Modern physics is currently broken into two incompatible worlds: the predictable large and the chaotic quantum small. String theory proposes a radical solution, suggesting that everything we see—from electrons to gravity—is actually just different notes played by tiny, vibrating filaments of energy.

The fundamental problem in modern physics is a mismatch between General Relativity, which governs the 'large' world (gravity), and quantum mechanics, which rules the 'small' world (the strong nuclear force, weak force, and electromagnetism). Currently, these two sets of equations are incompatible. String theory seeks to bridge this divide by providing a 'theory of everything' that unites all particles and forces into one mathematical framework.

At its core, string theory replaces the idea of point-like particles with 1-dimensional filaments or strings. These bits of energy vibrate in specific patterns; just as different vibrations on a piano string produce different musical notes, different vibrations of these fundamental strings create various elementary particles. For instance, one vibration might manifest as an electron, while another produces an Up quark. Crucially, the mathematics also predicts a particle with the properties of a graviton—the theoretical quantum carrier of gravity—which is the key to linking the two worlds.

However, this theory requires some startling assumptions. To produce the variety of particles we observe, these strings must vibrate in 9 spatial dimensions. Since we only perceive three, theorists argue that the remaining six are so incredibly small they remain hidden from our senses. Furthermore, because these strings are so minute—roughly the size of a 2-inch piece of yarn if an atom were scaled to the size of the Earth—they are currently impossible to detect with any existing technology.

The geometry of these extra dimensions is vital to the theory's output. Much like how the shape of a French horn or trumpet changes its sound, the specific twists and turns of these hidden dimensions determine the vibrational patterns of the strings. This suggests that the very nature of our existence might be dictated by the unique architecture of dimensions we cannot see.
