The universe is organized into a massive cosmic web

In short: From microscopic systems to the vastness of space, nature organizes matter into functional structures. While galaxies might appear scattered, they are actually components of a complex hierarchy. By understanding how parts relate to a whole, we can decode how the largest structures in existence actually function.

To understand the universe, scientists look at the relationship between structure and function. A system is defined as a set of components working together to achieve a specific activity or purpose. This principle applies to microscopic structures, which require specialized parts to function at a scale invisible to the naked eye, as well as complex natural systems where the function depends entirely on the relationships among its connected parts.

On a cosmic scale, this organization is visible in the distribution of galaxies. While the Hubble Ultra Deep Field shows nearly 10,000 galaxies, they are not randomly placed. They form a hierarchy: galaxy groups (containing 100 or fewer galaxies) and galaxy clusters (containing hundreds to thousands of galaxies) act as building blocks. For instance, the Coma cluster spans over 20 million light-years and houses more than 1,000 individual galaxies, along with hot gas reaching tens of millions of degrees and significant amounts of dark matter.

These clusters aggregate into superclusters, such as Laniakea, which are typically not gravitationally bound to one another. Even the space between these structures is not empty; it contains the intergalactic medium—a thin mixture of gas and plasma. This medium is extremely hot, reaching millions of degrees, yet it is so sparse that it contains only about one atom per cubic foot. Over cosmic history, this medium has been enriched with heavier elements like oxygen and silicon, ejected into space by the life cycles and supernovae of stars.
