Is the universe a giant brain or a conscious mind?

Superconsciousness: Is the universe a conscious mind? · 7:40 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: If humans are conscious because of our complex brains, could the universe itself possess a form of superconsciousness? This idea, known as panpsychism, suggests that consciousness might not be a human invention but a fundamental property of the cosmos, potentially existing independently of our own awareness.

The concept of panpsychism has existed for thousands of years, appearing in diverse religious traditions. It ranges from the omnipresent God of the Old Testament to the Brahman of Hinduism and Buddhism. In the Buddhist tradition, the philosophy goes as far as suggesting that nothing exists except consciousness. Modern thinkers, such as theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson, have embraced this view, suggesting that the universe operates through its own consciousness rather than just through the awareness of humans. To understand this, scientists distinguish between intelligence and consciousness.

While a supercomputer can be highly intelligent by out-thinking humans at games like chess or Jeopardy, it lacks a will of its own because it is controlled by a programmer. Consciousness, by contrast, is often defined by the degree of control a being has over itself or its surroundings. Neuroscientist Giulio Tononi of the University of Wisconsin-Madison developed a measurement unit called 'phi' to quantify this level of consciousness.

One theory suggests that consciousness is an emergent property of complex, interconnected systems. In humans, this arises from networks of neurons firing chemical and electronic signals; individual neurons are not conscious, but their interactions create a conscious state. If this holds true, consciousness may scale with complexity. Such reasoning suggests that trees possess greater awareness than stones, cats exceed worms in consciousness, and the cosmos might embody the highest state of sentience. This perspective invites a comparison between the human brain and the cosmos. Our brains consist of billions of interconnected neurons, while the universe contains hundreds of billions of galaxies. If consciousness emerges from large, communicating networks, some wonder if a similar communication mechanism exists at the quantum level between entangled particles or across the vast network of galaxies.
