In short: Born from the privatization of Alberta’s state-run telephone services, Telus transformed through strategic mergers and acquisitions into a national powerhouse. Beyond managing mobile and internet networks, the company has navigated complex labor disputes, massive cybersecurity challenges, and a sprawling portfolio of corporate sponsorships that define its public presence today.

Telus Corporation originated in 1990 as a holding company created by the Alberta government to privatize Alberta Government Telephones. By 1995, the company expanded its reach by acquiring Edmonton Telephones, effectively becoming the sole provider for the province. The modern entity took shape in 1999 following a merger with BC Tel, a move that established it as Canada’s second-largest telecommunications firm, holding 22% of the market share at the time.

The company’s growth has been marked by significant corporate maneuvers and acquisitions. In 2000, it purchased Québec Téléphone, and in later years, it expanded into home security by acquiring Canadian operations from ADT in 2019. Further consolidation occurred with the purchases of Altima Telecom in 2022 and Start.ca in 2023. These moves reflect a broader strategy of diversification, moving beyond basic voice and data services into healthcare, smart home automation, and IPTV.

However, this expansion has not been without friction. In 2005, the company faced a contentious labor dispute with the Telecommunications Workers Union. During this period, Telus restricted customer access to a website that supported striking workers, citing concerns over content that identified employees crossing picket lines. The move drew significant criticism from the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association, which labeled the action as censorship, though the company eventually unblocked the site following a court injunction.

More recently, the company faced a major security crisis in March 2026. A cybercrime group known as ShinyHunters claimed to have stolen over 1 petabyte of data from Telus and Telus Digital. The breach reportedly included sensitive information such as FBI background checks, financial records, and source code. The attackers demanded a $65 million ransom, highlighting the immense risks inherent in managing the digital infrastructure that underpins modern telecommunications.
