In short: Teck Resources began as a gold miner in 1913 and grew into a global powerhouse for steelmaking coal, copper, and zinc. Yet, its journey is marked by massive infrastructure projects, high-stakes legal battles over transboundary pollution, and a recent pivot to become a pure-play metals producer for the modern economy.

Headquartered in Vancouver, Teck Resources emerged from the 2001 merger of Teck and Cominco, companies with roots stretching back to the late 19th century. For decades, the firm operated as a diversified resource entity, balancing traditional mining with ambitious energy ventures. Its portfolio once included the massive Fort Hills oil sands project, launched in 2018 at a cost of C$17 billion. However, the company faced significant regulatory and economic headwinds, most notably when it withdrew its C$20 billion Frontier Mine proposal in 2020, citing a lack of clarity regarding national climate policy.

The company's environmental legacy remains a point of intense scrutiny. Its smelting operations in Trail, British Columbia, were the subject of a long-running legal battle involving the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. Between 1930 and 1995, the facility discharged approximately 9.97 million tons of slag into the Upper Columbia River. In 2018, a U.S. court ruling finalized an US$8 million fine against Teck for this pollution, confirming that the Canadian firm was subject to American jurisdiction for its transboundary impact.

In recent years, Teck has undergone a strategic transformation. After rejecting a US$23.1 billion hostile takeover bid from Glencore in 2023, the company moved to divest its steelmaking coal business. By July 2024, this transition allowed Teck to focus exclusively on metals like copper and zinc. This shift culminated in a September 2025 announcement of a merger with Anglo American, aiming to create a global critical minerals champion. This evolution reflects a broader trend in the mining sector, where companies are increasingly realigning their assets to meet the demands of a changing global energy landscape.
