Texas Woman's University began as a vocational school for rural women in 1902.
In short: Originally founded to teach domestic skills to young women, this institution evolved into a major research university. Today, it remains the largest state-supported school primarily for women in the United States, balancing a historic commitment to female education with modern, co-educational programs in nursing, health sciences, and business.
Established by the Texas Legislature in 1901, the school opened its doors in Denton in 1902. Its early mission focused on providing practical training for women from rural areas who lacked access to comprehensive high schools. The curriculum was initially preparatory, with students entering as juniors if they already held a diploma. By 1915, the institution conferred its first bachelor's degrees, and by 1930, it began offering master's programs, solidifying its status as a premiere higher education destination.
The university's academic identity shifted significantly during the mid-20th century. It launched the state's first nationally accredited nursing program in 1950 and awarded its first doctoral degrees in 1953. In the 1960s, the school expanded its research footprint by partnering with the Oak Ridge Institute for Nuclear Studies and receiving NASA grants to investigate the health impacts of space flight. Today, the university is classified as an R2 institution, reflecting its high research spending and doctorate production.
While the university became fully co-educational in 1994, it maintains a unique focus on the educational needs of women. It is the only institution in Texas that requires all undergraduates to complete three credit hours of multicultural women's studies. The university also houses the Woman's Collection, one of the oldest and largest archives of American women's history in the country, which includes extensive repositories on women in aviation and culinary history.
The university operates across three campuses in Denton, Dallas, and Houston. Its nursing college is particularly notable, housing the world's largest doctoral program in the field. Despite its growth and expansion into diverse professional fields like business and kinesiology, the student body remains approximately 90% women, preserving the institution's long-standing legacy as a leader in female-focused higher education.
