The prehistoric skies were crowded with birds living alongside giants

The Birds That Lived With Dinosaurs · 7:27 · Video: SciShow · Watch at the source

In short: We often think of birds as the sole survivors of a lost world, but for nearly 100 million years, they weren't alone. They shared the planet with their massive relatives, evolving in the shadow of some of history's most famous predators.

While modern science confirms that birds are living dinosaurs, many people overlook the fact that diverse bird species coexisted with non-avian dinosaurs for tens of millions of years. By the end of the Cretaceous period, roughly 66 million years ago, a wide array of birds thrived in environments shared by iconic creatures like Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops.

These early avians evolved from small, meat-eating theropods—the same group to which the T. rex belonged. Unlike their massive cousins, these ancestors were smaller and began developing specialized traits for survival. One of the most famous early examples is Archaeopteryx, a corvid-sized creature found in what is now Germany. It possessed many dinosaurian features, including sharp teeth, fierce claws, and long bony tails, but it also displayed primitive bird characteristics like asymmetrical feathers capable of flapping flight.

The survival of these birds during the catastrophic Cretaceous extinction event—caused by a massive asteroid strike and volcanic activity—can likely be attributed to three key factors: their small body size, their ability to fly, and their dietary flexibility. While larger dinosaurs perished, these pioneering species were able to adapt to changing habitats, eventually diversifying into the more than 11,000 bird species we see today.

This evolutionary journey is a testament to adaptation over scale. From toothy ancestors in subtropical lagoons to modern soarers and divers, birds represent a lineage that successfully navigated the transition from terrestrial predators to masters of the air.
