The solid world is an illusion created by electromagnetic repulsion
In short: When you touch a chair, it feels solid. In reality, your body and the furniture are never actually touching. Instead, you are experiencing a sophisticated dance of quantum rules and electrical forces that create the sensation of matter from what is essentially empty space.
To understand why reality feels stable, we must look past Level 1—our everyday experience—into the mechanics of atoms (Level 3). Atoms are primarily composed of empty space. The mass resides in a tiny central nucleus, while electrons exist as wave-like probability clouds. The resistance you feel when touching an object isn't caused by physical contact between solid pieces; it is the result of electromagnetic repulsion between electrons and the Pauli exclusion principle, a quantum rule that prevents electrons from occupying identical states.
As we descend further into the subatomic, the definition of 'matter' shifts. At Level 4, protons and neutrons are revealed to be composed of quarks. However, at Level 5, modern physics suggests a deeper truth: these fundamental particles aren't tiny solid objects at all. They are localized excitations—vibrations—within underlying quantum fields that permeate the entire universe.
The structure of reality then moves from the microscopic to the structural and the abstract. Spacetime (Level 6) provides the four-dimensional fabric where mass curves geometry to create gravity. At the Planck scale (Level 7, approximately 10^-35m), our current theories break down, leading to speculative ideas that spacetime might be granular or composed of vibrating strings. Some theories even suggest that information (Level 8) is more fundamental than matter, with entanglement determining perceived distance.
The hierarchy then ascends back toward complexity. Molecules organize into biology (Level 9), which gives rise to the 'hard problem' of consciousness (Level 10)—the mystery of how neural signals produce subjective experience. Finally, at Level 11, self-aware reflection allows the universe to contemplate its own origins. We may not be at the peak of this hierarchy; we might simply be a middle layer in a vast structure that includes potential future layers of collective intelligence or simulated universes.
