99% of your body's mass comes from invisible binding energy
In short: If you stripped away the particles that make up your body, you would be left with almost nothing. The vast majority of your physical existence isn't made of matter in the way we perceive it; it is actually the result of intense forces holding subatomic pieces together.
While atoms were once thought to be indivisible building blocks, modern physics reveals a complex internal architecture. At the center lies a dense, positively charged nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons that do not follow neat orbits like planets. Instead, quantum mechanics dictates that electrons exist in probability clouds, behaving as both particles and waves. Their movement between energy levels is what allows elements to absorb or emit light, creating the colors we see in the world.
The true mystery lies deeper still, inside the protons and neutrons themselves. Discovered in the 1960s via particle accelerators, these are composed of quarks held together by gluons. These particles exhibit a property called asymptotic freedom: the harder you try to pull quarks apart, the stronger the force between them becomes. This interaction is so powerful that it accounts for nearly all of an atom's mass.
Specifically, only about 1% of a proton’s mass actually comes from its constituent quarks. The remaining 99% is generated by the binding energy of the gluons holding them together. This means that most of the 'stuff' we see and touch is actually a manifestation of energy rather than solid matter. Furthermore, in heavier atoms, relativity becomes significant; electrons can move at speeds reaching nearly half the speed of light, causing effects like orbital contraction that give gold its unique color.
Understanding these forces—the strong nuclear force holding the nucleus, the weak nuclear force driving radioactive decay, and the electromagnetic force binding electrons—has defined the modern era. From 1939's discovery of nuclear fission to our understanding of the fusion powering the Sun, humanity has learned to manipulate these tiny interactions to unlock massive amounts of energy.
