How a small Ohio town became an early pioneer of the electric age
In short: Long before electricity was a household standard, Tiffin, Ohio, made history by embracing the new technology. In 1884, a local church became the first public structure globally to be fitted with electrical wiring, a bold move that caught the attention of Thomas Edison himself, who gifted the congregation a chandelier.
The electrification of Tiffin in the late 19th century marked a significant milestone for the city, which was already establishing itself as a hub for glass and porcelain manufacturing. St Paul’s United Methodist Church served as the site of this technological leap. The installation was so forward-thinking that Thomas Edison, recognizing the community's pioneering spirit, presented the church with a brass chandelier that remains a fixture of the building today. This achievement solidified Tiffin's early reputation for innovation, as the city also became home to one of the first electric power plants in Ohio and only the third in the entire United States.
Beyond its electrical history, Tiffin’s development is deeply tied to the Sandusky River, which bisects the city. Founded in the early 19th century and named after Edward Tiffin, the first governor of Ohio, the city grew from settlements like Fort Ball and Oakley. By the late 1800s, the discovery of natural gas in the surrounding area provided a massive boost to its industrial sector, attracting companies that would define the local economy for decades. This industrial momentum helped the city evolve into a center for manufacturing, particularly in glass production, which remains a point of pride for local collectors and historians.
Today, Tiffin balances its rich industrial and architectural heritage with its identity as an educational community. Home to two universities, the city maintains a focus on academic and vocational training while managing modern infrastructure projects, such as recent road improvements and environmental initiatives funded by state grants. Despite facing challenges like the devastating flood of 1913, which caused significant property loss and loss of life, the city has consistently rebuilt. From its roots as a military depot during the War of 1812 to its current status as a county seat, Tiffin continues to preserve its history while adapting to the needs of its residents.
