Why the number 1 belongs to five different categories at once
In short: Most people see numbers as simple values, but mathematicians view them as a nested hierarchy. This video breaks down how numbers are classified into distinct systems based on their properties.
The real number system serves as the broad umbrella for almost any value you can place on a number line, including decimals, fractions, and constants like pi. These are divided into two primary subsets: rational numbers—which include terminating or recurring decimals—and irrational numbers, which consist of non-repeating, infinite decimals like the square root of 2.
Within the rational category, numbers are further refined into integers (positive whole numbers, negative whole numbers, and zero) and natural numbers. A notable point of mathematical debate exists regarding whether zero is a natural number; if it is excluded, a separate category called 'whole numbers' is used to include it.
