The invisible dance of oxygen gain and loss in our world

What Are Redox Reactions? (Oxygen Exchange) | Reactions | Chemistry | FuseSchool · 4:11 · Video: FuseSchool - Global Education · Watch at the source

In short: From the rust on a gate to the oxygen in your blood, redox reactions are constant. This video explains how the exchange of oxygen powers our technology and sustains our lives.

Oxidation-reduction, or redox, involves the gain or loss of oxygen. Oxidation is the gain of oxygen, while reduction is its loss. These reactions are fundamental to energy and industry: combustion releases energy as hydrogen bonds with oxygen, while iron oxidises to form rust.

The video highlights how these reactions are essential for life and manufacturing. Haemoglobin carries oxygen through the body via oxygen exchange, where iron oxidises. In industry, heating certain oxides to release oxygen allows for the production of pure metals, such as using coke to reduce iron ore in a blast furnace.
