Your atoms are essentially immortal, destined to cycle through the universe forever
In short: The law of conservation of matter dictates that your physical components cannot be destroyed. When you die, your body doesn't vanish; it simply rearranges. From the carbon in your muscles to the nitrogen in your blood, every atom is preparing for a new life as part of something else.
According to the law of conservation of matter, matter cannot be created or destroyed. This means that all atoms belonging to the roughly 100 billion people who have lived since humanity's dawn are still present in our world today. While your unique biological structure dissolves upon death, the fundamental building blocks—protons, neutrons, and electrons—remain practically unchanged for billions of years, governed by the principles of decay and entropy.
The process of redistribution begins immediately after death as your immune system ceases to function. This allows approximately 100 trillion bacteria, which lived primarily in your gut, to begin metabolizing your soft tissues for energy and reproduction. These microbes break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates into various gases and nutrients. For instance, nitrogen atoms from your proteins are converted into ammonia and nitrogen oxides—some of which are greenhouse gases up to 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
Your physical legacy takes different paths depending on disposal methods. In a burial, water molecules evaporate or leach into the soil while other nutrients enrich the earth. If cremated, high heat transforms most atoms (hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur) into gases like water vapor and sulfur oxides. Interestingly, the resulting ashes typically weigh about the same as your birth weight. Ultimately, these atoms may become part of a plant through photosynthesis or enter the atmosphere to be inhaled by another living being.
This is an infinite cycle of rearrangement. The carbon in a potato might end up in your body, only to be exhaled as carbon dioxide for a tree to use as sugar. You are not just a temporary arrangement of matter; you are a brief configuration of ancient atoms that will continue to circulate through the biosphere and atmosphere indefinitely.
